A report by the IDF diabetes atlas, titled, ‘Diabetes the Ever Growing Problem’ has revealed that about 6.7 million deaths recorded globally are linked to Diabetes Mellitus. This was even as experts called for the introduction of a specific tax on all sugar-sweetened beverages and not only carbonated drinks. While making a presentation at a public lecture hosted by the National Action on Sugar Reduction on Tuesday, the President, Diabetic Foot Nigeria Initiative Nigeria Representative, Mrs. Felicia Anumah, said the prevalence of diabetes in Nigeria ranged between 0.6 and 15 per cent. Anumah, who is also a Professor of Medicine and Endocrinology at the University of Abuja quoted the report, saying about 537 million adults across the world were currently living with the disease out of which 24 million emerged from Africa. The Federal Government has said the crude oil production in the country declined to an average of 1.6 million barrels per day this year on the back of theft and insecurity, among other factors. The government, through the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, one of the two new regulators in the nation’s oil and gas industry, said this on Tuesday at the annual conference of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists in Lagos. The Commission Chief Executive, NUPRC, Mr Gbenga Komolafe, noted that crude oil export in the country began at 5,000bpd, culminating in 2.2 million bpd in the ‘90s, while the oil and gas reserves were 25 billion barrels and 166 trillion cubic feet respectively. A woman, Sekinat Adesanya, has been killed by hoodlums during a robbery around Moro community, close to Odokekere, in the Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State. We gathered that Sekinat was on her way to join in the preparation for a family member’s wedding ceremony around 5.30am when two hoodlums mugged her. The hoodlums were said to have used a knife to slit Sekinat’s throat and dispossessed her of her phone and other valuables. Residents, who heard Sekinat’s scream for help during a scuffle with the hoodlums, rushed to her rescue. The hoodlums, upon sighting the residents, fled on a motorcycle. Sekinat’s husband, Isa, said people met his wife in a pool of blood, adding that she died shortly after the attack. He urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his wife’s death and bring the suspects to book.
